Hanuman is portrayed not merely as an emotional devotee, but as a complete, ideal personality (Paripurna Vyakti) who perfectly balanced devotion, courage, and efficiency. According to Swami Vivekananda, Hanuman's character is the ultimate role model for the youth, combining the ultimate spirit of service with the bravery of a lion.
Here are the key qualities of Hanuman
1. Supreme Dedication and Selflessness:
Hanuman's sole purpose was to serve Lord Rama, and he did so without any fear for his own life. He practiced strict celibacy (Brahmacharya), had absolute control over his senses, and was so selfless that he did not even desire the supreme status of becoming Brahma or Shiva, wishing only to be Rama's servant.
2. Absolute Humility and Absence of Ego:
Despite his immense strength and knowledge, Hanuman was entirely free of pride. When Sita questioned how the monkeys could possibly cross the ocean, Hanuman did not boast of his own power; instead, he humbly claimed to be the least powerful in Sugriva's army, ensuring her that the others were much stronger. He never sought to become a king and faithfully discharged his duties as Sugriva's minister without feeling the role was beneath him.
3. Mastery of Speech and Communication:
Lord Rama praised Hanuman's communication skills, noting that he spoke flawlessly, without a single grammatical error, and with a perfectly modulated, soothing voice. Hanuman knew how to speak honestly yet diplomatically, tailoring his words to suit the situation and the listener's state of mind.
4. Foresight and Strategic Thinking:
Hanuman always looked beyond the immediate task. After finding Sita, he deliberately destroyed the Ashoka grove to provoke Ravana's forces, using it as a strategic opportunity to gauge the enemy's military strength before the actual war. He also took the initiative to kill the powerful Aksha Kumara, eliminating a major future threat before it could grow.
5. Overcoming Despair and Depression:
When his initial search for Sita in Lanka failed, Hanuman felt a deep wave of despair and even worried that his failure would lead to the mass suicide of his friends. However, he quickly conquered these negative thoughts, realizing that despair is the root of all ruin, and resumed his mission with renewed vigor.
6. Tackling Obstacles with Intelligence and Courage:
While leaping across the ocean, he faced three distinct obstacles and defeated them using different methods: he politely declined the mountain Mainaka's offer to rest (showing unwavering focus), used his sharp intellect to shrink in size and outwit the serpent mother Surasa, and used his sheer strength to kill the demoness Simhika.
Empathy and Compassion: When he finally located Sita, he knew that appearing suddenly would terrify her. Displaying deep empathy for her suffering, he first hid in a tree and sang the story of Rama, gently building her trust before revealing himself to offer her comfort.
7. Teamwork and Leadership:
When Angada and the other monkeys grew depressed and rebellious due to their failure to find Sita within the given deadline, Hanuman effectively managed the crisis. He used diplomacy, logic, and comfort to unite the team and prevent a revolt against Sugriva.
8. Self-Reflection and Anger Management:
After burning down Lanka in a fit of rage, Hanuman immediately engaged in self-reflection and deeply regretted his actions, fearing he might have accidentally harmed Sita. He recognized that unchecked anger destroys a person's ability to reason, demonstrating his capacity to admit and analyze his own mistakes.
9. Broad-Mindedness and Objective Judgment:
When Ravana's brother Vibhishana sought refuge with Rama, the other monkeys were suspicious. Hanuman, however, analyzed the situation with a clear, unbiased mind, putting aside his own ego. He logically deduced Vibhishana's pure intentions and offered Rama objective advice to accept him. He also possessed the rare quality of acknowledging greatness even in his enemies, admiring Ravana's majestic aura despite their enmity.
