परैः परिभवे प्राप्ते वयं पञ्चोत्तरं शतम्।
परस्पर विरोधे तु वयं पञ्च शतं तु ते॥

paraiḥ paribhave prāpte vayaṃ pañcottaraṃ śatam।
paraspara virodhe tu vayaṃ pañca śataṃ tu te॥

एक बार चित्ररथ (गन्धर्व) ने कौरवों का हरण कर लिया था, और कहीं दूर जाकर छिप गया। हस्तिनापुर के महाराज धृतराष्ट्र सहित तमाम पांडव विरोधियों ने इसको लेकर अफवाहों का दौर चला दिया, इसमें एक बड़ा कारण यह भी था कि भीमसेन बड़े ही प्रसन्न हुए और बोले कि अच्छा हुआ, बिना मारे ही दुश्मन मर गये। आरोप-प्रत्यारोप के दौरान जब युवराज युधिष्ठिर के पास समाचार आया तो वे बोले कि हमारा और कौरवों का जो विरोध है वह परस्पर का विरोध है। जब तक हममें परस्पर विरोध है, तब तक हम पांच हैं और वे सौ हैं, परंतु दूसरे के साथ विरोध होने पर हम एक सौ पाँच हैं।

Once upon a time Chitrarath (a Gandharv) kidnapped the Kauravas and hid away somewhere. Bhimsen was delighted at this news that the enemies have been vanquished without fighting a war. This and other factors led to rumor mongering in the state of Hastinapur by all those who disliked the Pandavas. When the matter was brought to Yudhisthir he said that the dispute between Pandavas and the Kauravas is internal, as long as the matters of internal disputes stand we stand opposed to each other; we are five and they are hundred. But when the dispute is with an external force then we are one hundred and five.
